Red and yellow flags are the international symbols used to identify the safest swimming waters, and help RNLI lifeguards keep us safe on the beach. The flags steer swimmers away from dangers such as strong rip currents, while also providing peace of mind that a lifeguard is close at hand. A vital part of lifeguard kit, but one that is often taken for granted, a set of flags can help keep huge numbers of holidaymakers out of trouble. Quite an achievement for some simple pieces of cloth!
"Putting the flags out is the first thing we do every morning. They give a clear sign that the lifeguards are in attendance."
Trent Knight, Lifeguard, Sandbanks
