When a lifeboat crew member is called out, there’s no time to grab a bite to eat. All-weather lifeboat shouts often last for hours, and the crew need something under their belts. The self-heating cans of food in lifeboat galleys are pretty clever – push down the spike and a chemical reaction heats the meal up within 12 minutes. Crew can choose sausage and beans, Irish stew or chicken casserole.

"I challenge anyone to eat off a plate on a lifeboat at sea. These cans make it a lot easier. It's the worst feeling being on a shout when you're hungry, especially if your dinner was interrupted! Some of the shouts last hours, and you need to stay awake."

Jerry Early, Second Coxswain, Arranmore
